What is an air fryer?
Contrary to their name, air fryers do not fry food. Instead, air fryers work like convection ovens, using a fan to circulate the hot air. The main difference between a regular convection oven and an air fryer is that the fan in an air fryer blows the air at a higher speed and the compartment in which the food is cooked is smaller. For both of these reasons, the hot air reaches the food faster and the food loses less heat during transport. Most fryers have a perforated rack or basket to allow air to pass through and hit the food from all sides.
This fast, hot roasting, or “super convection”, quickly browns chicken, potatoes, frozen snacks, vegetables, and fish without overcooking the interior. This process is very similar to frying, hence the comparison and the name.
This is not true for all foods, but I have flown many foods and they taste almost the same as if they had been fried. In fact, some foods taste better because they are not fried in oil.
Types of air fryers
There are two main types of air fryers. Traditional models have drawer-like baskets where you place the food you’re cooking, while newer iterations have trays or mesh grids. Choose the one that best suits your individual needs.
Air fryers with baskets are the most common type of air fryer. After all, this is the original design of air fryers. These models usually have a basket for food and a handle to hold the basket in place and activate the cooker. They are also useful for mixing food to ensure even cooking.
Basket fryers are available in digital and manual models. Digital models allow you to control the cooking time and temperature at the touch of a button. These models often have a digital touchpad and also have presets for common foods – fries, chicken, seafood, and vegetables – and an indicator to let you know when the basket has reached the desired temperature.
Manual models are often less expensive, but they don’t have all the advanced features of digital models. Instead, these units are controlled by analog dials, two of which are typical, which set the temperature and time. The dial ticks when cooking is in progress and chimes when finished.
CR does not currently test paddle air fryers, but these automatic basket fryers are also available. The paddle type heats the food as it is moved by the paddles, so you can set it and forget it.
Air fryers with mesh trays are steadily gaining in popularity. Unlike fryers with baskets, these units cook food in a flat or shallow pan, much like a countertop toaster oven. In our review, Cuisinart only provided one tray, but there are several models on the market that have multiple racks, and a few even come with accessories for roasting, dehydrating, and grilling.
These models, like their basket counterparts, have the option of manual or digital control with the ability to operate in a similar manner.
What are the main differences between the two types?
The tray design allows the user to monitor the food as it cooks. The window allows the user to look into the convection oven while cooking. This means there is no need to stop the cooking process to see where the food is at.
Another advantage of these air fryers is the amount of food that can be cooked at one time. Models with multiple racks can cook vegetables, meat, and side dishes at the same time, using the same countertop surface as models with baskets.

How To Choose The Best Air Fryer for One Person | Ultimate Guide 2023
The size of an air fryer usually depends on its capacity, which is usually measured in quarts. If you only plan to use your fryer for solo meals, a four-quart air fryer will provide more than enough capacity for dishes like fried chicken or crispy vegetables.
Before you invest in a fryer, consider how much counter space you have in your kitchen. You don't want to buy a fryer that is too big for your kitchen, so it's important to know the limits of your work space!
If you want to take it a step further, check out our list of different air fryer sizes to choose from.
The look and design of your air fryer can be a consideration, especially if aesthetics are important to you. Since this is largely a personal preference, you'll quickly be able to tell which fryer you prefer from an aesthetic standpoint.
In general, there are two types of fryers: the toaster oven type and the basket type. Both have different features, so be sure to compare them to find the one that's right for you.
When choosing the right fryer for you, price is a major concern. Since you'll be comparing single-person airplanes, the prices will usually be much lower than most multi-person options on the market.
A good way to set a budget for yourself is to look at each component of the air fryer and decide what is important to you. For example, if you want a range of accessories for your air fryer, you will need to spend a little more.
Generally speaking, when it comes to air fryers, you don't have to worry too much about the accessories that come with them. Most fryers come with everything you need. So accessories are just a nice bonus, not a major selling point.
Ease of use
If you've never used a fryer before, you need to make sure it's easy to use. Most air fryers work the same way, so it can be hard to know what makes one air fryer easier to use than another.
Always check to see if the fryer comes with an instruction manual.
Benefits of a single-person fryer
If you are using a fryer for yourself, it is always a good idea to get a larger fryer for your family and friends. However, it is more those who live alone who should get the best single person air fryer. There are many benefits to buying a smaller unit. Here are some of them.
If you decide to buy a large unit, you will spend more time cooking. But when it comes to smaller units that can only hold two or three servings, preparing your meals can be done much faster than before.
Simple controls on all models
Many people say that one of the reasons they choose the smaller units over the larger ones is that these products have a simpler interface. Even children can use them easily.
If you don't have a big family, get a smaller unit
If you don't live with a lot of people, you don't need to buy a large fryer. Smaller ones can do the same thing, but they have less capacity and power, so you'll spend less time cooking your favorite dishes.
Small and easy to use
Fryers, ideal for one person, are also much smaller than larger appliances. Of course, these units don't take up much space on your countertop. Plus, they look less like a complicated appliances and can be easily handled by anyone in the house.
Excellent cooking effect
These products may be much cheaper than the larger models, but they still give excellent cooking results, like the larger machines that cost much more to purchase. They also don't give your kitchen an industrial look, as grease stains are not a problem.

Frequently asked questions
What size fryer is best for one person?
If you're only using it to cook for one person, you don't need more than 4 liters of cooking capacity. This will be enough to cook even the largest meals for one person.
Is an air fryer worth it for one person?
Yes, it's definitely worth it to buy an air fryer for one person. You can enjoy healthy and tasty meals and snacks.
Can I use aluminum foil?
Aluminum foil can be used in deep fryers, as long as you use it safely and follow the advice given. The foil should only be used inside the fryer basket to keep it away from critical electronic components.
Do I have to clean it after each use?
To prolong the life of your fryer and avoid unpleasant odors, it is recommended that you clean it after each use. To avoid unhygienic conditions, always wipe off any leftover food.
Is air frying healthy?
Depending on what you're cooking, frying in a deep fryer is almost always healthier than frying or pan-frying in oil. Less oil means less fat and fewer calories.
What can you cook in a deep fryer?
Wings, fried chicken, French fries, and mozzarella chicken are among the best foods to fry. They will be crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
Since the air fryer is an oven, it can do much more than a solo air fryer. It can cook fish, vegetables, pizza, and bread. It can also reheat food, reheat leftovers, and much more.
My favorite way to cook chicken is "fried chicken", which is chicken with the skin on. Just sprinkle with egg and seasoned flour and cook on high for 25 minutes. I also like potato wedges, Brussels sprouts, dumplings (lightly oiled), seasoned mushrooms, and minced garlic.
Should I use oil in the fryer?
Simple answer. No, oil is not necessary. However, some foods taste better with a light spray or layer of cooking oil. Vegetables such as green beans, broccoli, asparagus, and potatoes will dry out in the fryer and can be lightly sprayed with avocado or olive oil.
Remember that frying or pan-frying requires much less oil than immersing the food in oil. Foods that are oily in nature, such as chicken and salmon, can be seasoned with lots of natural oil during cooking.
How much does a deep fryer cost?
In our experience, however, the most expensive fryer is not always the best. A basic fryer is not a very complex machine, so there is no need to buy an expensive one. Small fryers start at $25 or $30 and are perfectly functional. If you jump up another $30 or $40, you'll get better construction, a cleaner look, and usually a little more power as well.

- Kitchen space: A 2-liter air fryer is generally smaller in size and takes up less counter space than larger air fryers, which can be a consideration if you have limited kitchen space.
- Budget: 2-liter air fryers tend to be less expensive than larger models, so if you're on a budget, a smaller air fryer may be a good option.
In general, a 2-liter air fryer can be a good choice for individuals or small families who cook small portions of food. However, if you have larger cooking needs or plan to cook larger items, a larger air fryer may be a better choice.
