Types of air cleaners
Several technologies are used in air cleaners to reduce indoor pollution. Some of them are more effective than others. Some are also considered unhealthy.
Model with a mechanical filter
CR tests this type. Air cleaners with pleated filters use a fan to pump air through a dense mesh of fine fibers that trap particles. Very fine mesh filters are HEPA filters, certified to trap 99.97% of particles of a certain size (0.3 micrometers in diameter, such as smoke or paint pigments). HEPA filters also remove airborne dust, pollen, mold spores and other larger particles. Particles can also be removed.
Mechanical filters are not effective against gases and odors. They are also expensive to maintain. Mechanical filters must be replaced every 6 to 12 months and can cost up to $200 per filter, usually up to $80.
Models with activated carbon filters
Instead of trapping particles like mechanical filters, adsorption filters use activated carbon, which can capture some odor-causing molecules in the air. They can also tackle some gases, but they are not particularly effective against formaldehyde, ammonia or nitrogen oxides. Activated charcoal filters do not fight particulates, so many air cleaners have both an activated charcoal filter and a pleated filter to capture particulates. However, activated carbon saturates more quickly than pleated filters and must be replaced more frequently, every three months versus every six to twelve months for pleated filters. You should budget accordingly for replacement. Activated carbon filters can cost up to $50 each.
Ozone generators
Ozone is a molecule that can react with certain pollutants and change their chemical composition. For this reason, CR does not recommend this type of air cleaner. Although ozone generator manufacturers often claim to produce safe levels of ozone, past tests have shown that some ozone generators, even at low settings, quickly exceed the Food and Drug Administration’s 0.05 ppm limit for medical devices. In addition, studies conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have shown that low levels of ozone, the main component of smog, do not effectively destroy indoor pollutants. Studies have also shown that ozone is linked to reduced lung function and increased risk of throat irritation, coughing, chest pain and inflammation of lung tissue. Ozone exposure can also exacerbate asthma, emphysema and bronchitis.
Electronic air cleaners
Electrostatic precipitators and ionizers electrically charge airborne particles and cause them to adhere to nearby plates or surfaces of the device by a magnetic-type attraction. Electronic air cleaners are generally not tested or recommended by CR because of their potential to produce ozone.
Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI)
Some air purifier manufacturers claim to kill airborne viruses, bacteria and mold spores with UV lamps. However, some bacteria and mold spores are resistant to UV irradiation. Therefore, the UV light must be of sufficient intensity and long enough duration to be effective, ranging from a few seconds to several hours, rather than the few seconds of a typical CR UVGI air cleaner has not tested UVGI technology, but some mechanical air cleaners have this feature.

Tips for improving air quality
In addition to purchasing an air purifier, there are a number of best practices you can do at home to reduce air pollution; the CDC provides the following tips on how to improve building ventilation
- Whenever possible, keep windows and doors open until it is safe to do so.
- Install fans to improve the flow of fresh air through open windows.
- Make sure the fan is working properly.
Do you need an air purifier in the first place?
With COVID-19, wildfires and pollution, we may be more aware of air quality than ever before. However, air cleaners are not necessarily a panacea for these problems. As mentioned earlier, in a home environment, transmission of viruses is usually through close contact. This means that if a roommate or family member living in the same house gets sick, an air purifier probably won’t protect you. However, air purifiers can help businesses and restaurants looking to improve the air quality of their indoor spaces.

Matching room size
All manufacturers list the size of the room their water purifiers are compatible with, which can be a bit arbitrary. Nevertheless, the manufacturer’s figures are a good starting point. If you place a purifier in a room that is too large, it will not be able to clean the air effectively.

Filter life
How long before the filter needs to be replaced and how much does it cost to replace it? Some purifiers record filter life in the application, which is helpful.
Loudness
If the airflow is high, purifiers can be very loud (you can’t sleep near them). However, most purifiers are virtually silent at their lowest operating level, and some have a special “night mode” that makes them super quiet.

CADR
Clean Air Delivery Rate, a standard developed by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, which expresses in a series of numbers the amount of air that can be cleaned in a given time. Separate figures are given for smoke, pollen and dust, and AHAM recommends using a purifier in a room with an area equal to 150% of the CADR (assuming a ceiling height of 2.5 m) (in other words, use a purifier in a room with an area equal to (assuming a ceiling height of 8 feet)) in order to use a purifier). However, many manufacturers claim that their purifiers can fit in rooms much larger than this. Also note that while CADR is supposed to be measured in cubic feet per minute, some vendors measure it in cubic meters per hour. If necessary, these numbers are converted to common U.S. units.
Pollutant levels
Pollutant levels reported by the app What does the app tell you about air quality? A detailed look at individual pollutants is more useful than a general air quality rating of “good, fair or poor”.

Other ways to improve indoor air quality
Vacuum regularly
Large allergens, such as dust mites and pet hair from furniture and carpets, cannot be removed by air cleaners and become airborne. Clean floors and furniture once or twice a week with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter.
Use exhaust fans in kitchens
Do the same in bathrooms and laundry rooms.
Stop smoking indoors
The same goes for burning candles or wood.
Ventilate
On sunny days, open windows to let in clean, dry outdoor air. If you can’t open the windows because of pollen or allergies, run an air conditioner or forced ventilation system with a clean air filter.
Reduce chemical use
Limit cleaning products with high chemical content and keep paints, adhesives and insecticides out of your home.

FAQs
How do air fryers work?
Air fryers work by circulating very hot convection air at a faster rate than most other ovens. It does not fry food, but is similar to roasting. The hot air hits the food faster, so the outside burns faster than in other convection cooking methods, producing a crust similar to the taste and texture of fried food. It also cooks food in a shorter time than other ovens, which is why it is compared to frying in oil, because the food is wetter on the inside.
What kind of food can be cooked with an air fryer?
Dishes like chicken wings, chicken fillets, French fries and mozzarella cheese are popular. Fish such as salmon can also be cooked in an air fryer so that the inside is moist and the outside skin is golden. Bone-in and skin-on chicken thighs and vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, mushrooms, onions, peppers and carrots are also very tasty when cooked in the deep fryer. Frozen foods such as dumplings, potatoes, hot pockets and tater tots can be prepared in the fryer for a quick and easy snack or side dish. Leftover pizza or fried chicken from the night before can also be quickly reheated in the fryer. It heats up almost as fast as a microwave and usually tastes better.
Are deep fryers bad for my health?
Deep fryers are not bad for your health. In fact, cooking with an air fryer can produce foods that taste like fried food, but with very little oil. You can make healthy dishes like chicken wings, French fries and cheese sticks without using extra oil. Some foods work best in air fryers with a light coating of oil, but most don’t need it at all. Deep fryers are becoming increasingly popular because they allow you to eat snack-type foods, but with much less fat and calories.
Deep fryers use convection heat, like a traditional oven, but at a much faster rate. There is no need to worry about magnetic waves or experimental heat sources.
Are air purifiers good for covids?
HEPA air cleaners capture and remove virus particles from the air. However, if you live with someone who is contagious, an air purifier may not protect you from viral particles. We spoke to Dr. Richard Shaughnessy, director of the Indoor Air Laboratory at the University of Tulsa, who told us that transmission of COVID usually occurs through close contact with an infected person. If you’re sitting on the couch talking to an infected person, an air purifier across the room isn’t going to remove all the harmful particles exhaled before they reach you.
Are air cleaners a waste of money?
Air purifiers, as the name implies, are effective at removing particles from the air (especially if they use HEPA filters). However, most of us already have a mechanism to effectively filter the air: the respiratory system. Dr. Alex Berezow, a microbiologist and vice president for science communication at the American Council on Science and Health, noted in his blog. Inside the lungs’ tiny air sacs (called alveoli) live immune cells called macrophages. These “macrophages” devour bacteria, viruses, fungi and any other debris that enters the lungs.
In summary, air purifiers are effective, but unless you live in a particularly polluted environment or you or your children are immunocompromised, you probably don’t need them.
Do air cleaners increase or decrease the oxygen in the room?
No, they do not. Air purifiers usually use a fan to pump air from the room into an internal filter or chamber, which traps airborne particles. However, this process does not affect the actual composition of the air, adding or removing oxygen and other gases.

Where is the best place to put an air purifier?
The best place to place an air cleaner is in a room that is equal to or smaller than its CADR rating; while a unit can effectively clean the air in a room of 250 square feet or less, it should not be placed in the main center of a large home. For locations in these rooms, you must ensure that the inlet and outlet of the purifier are not obstructed by walls or furniture. This means it should be placed in an open area, ideally where there is a constant flow of air for easy circulation – which probably means near doors or vents.
