What is a slow cooker?
It is an electric product that cooks food safely at low temperatures. What you get through the cooking process is a tender, flavorful dish. Slow cooking at low temperatures allows even inexpensive meats to become tender and fall off the bone.
Slow cookers can be left alone, so busy people with little time in the kitchen can prepare healthy, nutritious meals for themselves, their partners, and their families. Simply chop and saute the ingredients, place them in the pan, and set the required temperature. The result is a meal that is ready to eat even if you are away from the kitchen all day.
Types of Slow Cookers
If you are not familiar with slow cookers There are three general types of countertop slow cookers. We prefer slow cookers for stir-frying, but we’ve got all types covered, so you’re sure to find the perfect slow cooker for your kitchen.
There are three types of slow cookers in this category:
Traditional slow cookers with ceramic inserts. This slow cooker is the cheapest. The larger models are rectangular and the smaller ones are round. Manual slow cookers and programmable slow cookers. Manual slow cookers are good for making sauces and dips but require special controls. So if you are going to be away from home to make dinner, a manual slow cooker is not recommended (read why a “slow cooker timer” is not the solution).
Slow cookers with searing and sautéing functions with a metal insert. Such appliances are often referred to as “multi-cookers.” They are also often characterized by large rectangular pans. We prefer this style of the slow cooker. Note that this type tends to cook slightly faster than the ceramic type mentioned above.
Electric pressure cooker with slow cooking mode. Also called a multi-cooker. This type of appliance is often round and deep. Pressure cooking is the primary function and slow cooking is offered as a secondary function.
The difference between a slow cooker and a pressure cooker
Slow cookers have an electric element at the bottom of the housing and are manufactured and supplied by many brands, including Crock-Pot.
A slow cooker is one in which the electrical element is at the bottom of the pot but wraps around the sides of the housing. This allows for a more even heat source.
Slow cookers are also manufactured by a variety of brands.

How To Pick The Best Large Capacity Slow Cookers | Ultimate Guide 2023
Features to Consider
A sturdy handle is a must, but slow cookers also offer useful features such as a grill for grilling meat and poultry or steaming vegetables, wrap-around cord storage, and an insulated carry bag.
Slow Cooker Sizes
Size is important because if the appliance is undercooked (overcooked) or overfilled (undercooked), the food will not cook according to the recipe.
Serves 2 people (1 to 3 pints)
- 1 to 3 pints (one person or couple)
- 4 to 5 pints (couple or small family)
- 6 to 7 pints (family or guests)
Be sure to consider where you will store the casserole. Store them in an easily accessible location for more use. You may need more than one size of slow cooker. You don't have to buy several to have options. Some units have interchangeable cooking inserts.
Shape and style of slow cooker
We've all seen the traditional round shape of a slow cooker, which is ideal for stews and casseroles. There are also rectangular and oval slow cookers suitable for cooking bone-in meats, poultry, roasts, ribs, and hams.
Also note that rectangular or oval cookers fit into spaces, countertops, and cabinets and have more space around them than round cookers. Stainless steel or black cookers are beautiful and easy to clean. Decorative colors and patterns are also available.
Space
Consider the amount of food you intend to cook for you and your family, the space needed for cabinets, and the space needed for counters. Round cookware tends to waste space. Rectangular cookware generally uses space more efficiently when stored.
Indicator lights
Look for indicator lights and an easily accessible and clearly labeled control switch.
Cracks and crevices
There should be few or no cracks and crevices where food can get stuck.
Timer
A timer is useful because it counts down the cooking time of the pot and alerts you when cooking is finished. Do not confuse it with a delay timer. Some members have wanted to buy a slow cooker with a delay timer, which you can set to turn on or off when you are away. You don't want to do this, because leaving food in the slow cooker at a fairly hot temperature encourages the growth of bacteria. If you find that your slow stove goes off prematurely, throw the food away immediately-it's probably not worth the risk of food poisoning.
Automatic setting
This setting is convenient because it starts in high mode to bring the food up to temperature, then switches to low for the rest of the cooking time.
For the elderly
People with limited mobility should look for a pot that is not too large and easy to handle-a huge bowl might be heavy or not fit in a small sink. The appliance should have clear instructions and large, well-labeled controls on the front that are easy to use.
Setup and Accessories
Features such as timer power on/off, a keep-warm setting, and digital controls all add to the price of a slow cooker. However, if you do not intend to use all of them, you may be able to save on the price without sacrificing functionality by purchasing one that has a keep-warm feature in addition to the other regular features.
If you really want to cook everything at once, choose a slow cooker with a browning and sautéing function. The aesthetics of the slow cooker are another feature to consider at this point, as it should match the interior design of your kitchen and other features. Some low-end slow cookers are more elegant than their high-end counterparts.
Kettle
Most of the slow cookers we tested feature oval-shaped ceramic pots. This shape is better suited for larger meats, such as roast meats, than round slow cookers.
Lids
A glass or clear plastic lid allows you to remove it and observe the process without losing heat. Some slow cookers have hinged lids that are convenient for serving food, but none of them are in the current ranking. Locking lids help prevent food from spilling during transport to potlucks and parties. Some slow cookers also have handles on the lid for easy transport.
Capacity
Capacities range from 1.5 to 8.5 liters. However, some instruction manuals recommend filling the cooker to half to three-quarters of its capacity to prevent undercooking or overcooking, or overflowing. Most of the slow cookers in our rankings are 6- to 7-quart models, a popular size. Slow cookers of similar capacity vary in size. Larger slow cookers are more difficult to store and carry, and of course, take up more counter space. Note that the models we tested ranged in weight from 7 to 17 pounds.

Temperature Sensor
Slow cookers are not all new features, but temperature probes are making their way into some of them. Insert the probe into a large piece of meat, select the temperature you want the meat to reach, and the slow cooker switches to keep-warm mode. The user manual for the Hamilton Beach Temp Tracker we tested includes advice on how to use the heat probe and the temperature-keeping mode for sous vide cooking.
Easy to Clean
Easy-to-clean dishwasher-safe pots and lids are conveniently located. Also, remember that touchpad controls are easier to clean than buttons.
Slow Cooker Safety Tips
While slow cookers are easy to use, they can be hazardous to your health if not cooked properly. The USDA recommends the following
- Store perishable foods in the refrigerator until ready to cook. If meat and vegetables are cut up first, store them separately in the refrigerator.
- Meat and poultry must be thawed before placing in the slow cooker.
- Please refer to the instruction manual for the recommended amount to use. Always add the appropriate amount of liquid.
- If power goes out while cooking and you are not home, discard the food even if it looks cooked. If you are home, finish cooking by other means, such as a gas grill or a neighbor's house. Transfer leftover food to a shallow container and store in the refrigerator.
- Do not reheat leftovers in a slow cooker. Instead, use a stovetop or microwave oven and heat until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. Then return the food to the preheated slow cooker for transport or serving.

FAQs
What can you cook on a slow stove?
It depends on the size, shape, and model you have, but you can make all the usual stews and casseroles.
Also, consider some of these dishes;
Chicken - whole and moist breasts, thighs, shredded chicken.
Beef - brisket and chuck steak simmered with rich sauces of any nationality or spicy.
Lamb - curried lamb cuts, shanks, leg, or shoulder of lamb.
Vegetables - prepared in the same way as meat dishes - layered to create lasagna.
Desserts - Puddings, cinnamon rolls, brownies, cakes, cheesecake, and peach cobbler: the list is endless.
What is the slow cooker size for a whole chicken?
A whole rotisserie chicken will fit comfortably in a 6-quart pot. If space is an issue and you think a 6-quart pot is too big, you can use a 4-quart pot. To prepare the chicken, simply cut it into pieces. You will have plenty of room to spare if you also remove the carcass.
Is a 3.5-quart slow cooker large enough?
A 3.5-quart slow cooker is roughly equivalent to a 3-quart slow cooker. This size is suitable for 2 or 3 people at most for simple dishes. If you plan to cook larger pieces of meat, a larger or oval-shaped model would be a better choice.
Is a 6-quart slow cooker too large?
A 6-quart slow cooker is ideal for large pieces of meat, chicken, and even lamb shanks. If you are preparing meals for one, two, or even three people, I recommend buying a smaller pot.
When preparing dishes such as casseroles or stews, the level of ingredients, including the liquid, should reach half to three-quarters of the pot so that the dish can cook as the recipe calls for.
My choice would fall on a 4-5 liter round pot. It will also give you more space on the countertops and in the kitchen cabinets.
Is it better to cook at low or high temperatures?
Depending on what the recipe calls for, you should consider this;
Low temperature - gives the meat a bone-dry tenderness.
High temperature - the meat will still be tender but firmer.
Do I need a slow cooker?
A slow cooker is a practical and versatile addition to your kitchen. They allow you to cook moist foods, such as soups, casseroles, and stews, at relatively low temperatures and with equally long cooking times (several hours). They can turn a tough piece of meat into a tender, easily digestible meal and are perfect for meat and chicken soups and any type of legume such as lentils or pulses.
Why a slow cooker might be right for you?
You can usually leave it unattended
- It allows you to cook inexpensive cuts of meat while retaining the natural juices.
- There is less mess
- No need to stir the meat
- Doesn't produce much heat in the kitchen and can be used year-round.
Why is the slow cooker not for you?
- Longer cooking time
- Bulky to store
- Can be interrupted by a power outage
- May require additional cooking steps (some foods must be cooked on a stove first to enhance flavor, such as browning meats, cooking onions and garlic, or frying pasta/curry powder).
Are slow cookers durable appliances?
Even if a slow cooker runs all day to prepare the meal, it does not consume much energy, making it an efficient way to cook. And if you use it in summer, it will produce less heat in the kitchen than in your oven, reducing the need for air conditioning.
Are slow cookers and rice cookers the same thing?
Slow cookers and rice cookers are not the same things. Although some manufacturers combine the functionality of both appliances in multiple cookers, these cooking methods work differently.
In contrast, using a rice cooker is a much faster cooking method. Initially, high heat is used to bring the liquid to a boil and create intense steam, before lowering the temperature to complete the cooking process and achieve the desired soft rice or steamed vegetables.
How big should my pot be?
If you are cooking for two people, a 3- or 4.5-quart slow stove will suffice. If you are cooking for a group, choose a 5-8 liter model. You can always make more and freeze the leftovers, but don't let them cool too long in the slow cooker.
Which is the largest capacity slow cooker?
Slow cookers come in different sizes, but the largest capacity slow cooker available in the market varies based on the brand and model. However, some of the largest slow cookers have a capacity of 10 quarts or more. One example is the Hamilton Beach 10 Quart Slow Cooker, which is a large slow cooker with a 10-quart capacity that can accommodate large cuts of meat and can cook enough food to feed a large family or a group of people. Another example is the Crock-Pot 10 Quart Express Crock XL Multi-Cooker, which is a versatile appliance that can slow cook, pressure cook, sauté, and more.

Is there a max fill in a slow cooker?
Yes, there is typically a maximum fill line in a slow cooker. This line indicates the maximum amount of ingredients that can be added to the slow cooker without overfilling it. Overfilling a slow cooker can lead to uneven cooking, and spillage, and may pose a safety risk.
The maximum fill line may vary depending on the size and model of the slow cooker. As a general guideline, it is recommended not to fill a slow cooker more than two-thirds full to ensure proper cooking and prevent spillage. It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific model of the slow cooker being used.
What is the difference between a slow cooker and a crockpot?
The terms "slow cooker" and "Crock-Pot" are often used interchangeably, but there are some differences between them.
A slow cooker is a kitchen appliance that cooks food slowly over several hours. It consists of a heating element, a cooking pot, and a lid. Slow cookers are designed to cook food at a low temperature for an extended period, typically between 4 to 10 hours. They are versatile appliances that can be used to make a wide variety of dishes, including stews, soups, chili, and roasts.
Crock-Pot is a brand name for a type of slow cooker that was introduced in the 1970s. The Crock-Pot was the original slow cooker and became so popular that the brand name became synonymous with the appliance itself. Crock-Pots are made by the company Sunbeam, but the term "Crock-Pot" is often used generically to refer to any slow cooker.
So, the main difference between a slow cooker and a Crock-Pot is that a Crock-Pot is a specific brand of the slow cooker. However, other brands of slow cookers may have slightly different features, such as different cooking settings, sizes, and shapes.
What happens if the slow cooker is too big?
If a slow cooker is too big, it may not cook the food evenly and can lead to undercooked or overcooked food. This can happen because a large slow cooker takes longer to heat up, and if there is not enough food in it, the heat may not be distributed evenly, leading to hot spots or areas where the food is not cooking as well.
Another problem with using a slow cooker that is too big is that the food may dry out, as there will be too much space for the liquid to evaporate. This can be especially problematic for recipes that require a lot of liquid, such as stews or soups.
Furthermore, using a slow cooker that is too big can be a waste of energy, as it will take longer for the appliance to heat up and maintain a consistent temperature. This can result in higher energy bills and may not be as environmentally friendly.
It's generally recommended to use a slow cooker that is appropriately sized for the amount of food being cooked. If a recipe is designed for a smaller slow cooker, it's better to use that size or adjust the recipe accordingly rather than using a larger slow cooker.

How many people will a 5 Litre slow cooker feed?
The capacity of a 5-liter slow cooker can vary slightly depending on the model and shape of the cooking pot, but as a general guideline, it can feed about 4 to 6 people.
The exact number of servings will depend on the type of dish being prepared and the serving size. For example, a 5-liter slow cooker can typically accommodate a whole chicken or a large roast, along with vegetables and liquid. This would be enough to serve a family of 4 to 6 people with some leftovers.
For dishes like stews or soups, the number of servings may be higher as they are typically served in smaller portions. A 5-liter slow cooker can easily prepare enough stew or soup to feed a family of 6 to 8 people.
It's important to note that the number of servings can vary depending on the appetite of the people being served, so it's always a good idea to make some extra if you're unsure.
What happens if you fill a slow cooker too full?
If you fill a slow cooker too full, it can lead to uneven cooking and potentially unsafe conditions. Here are some specific issues that can arise:
- Uneven cooking: If a slow cooker is too full, there may not be enough space for the heat to circulate properly, resulting in uneven cooking. The food at the bottom of the pot may be overcooked, while the food on top may be undercooked.
- Overflowing: If the slow cooker is too full, it can overflow, causing a mess and potentially creating a safety hazard. This is especially likely with dishes that have a lot of liquid, such as soups and stews.
- Food safety: Overfilling a slow cooker can also create a food safety risk. Slow cookers work by heating food slowly and at a low temperature, which means that it takes longer for the food to reach a safe temperature. If the slow cooker is too full, it can take even longer for the food to reach a safe temperature, potentially leading to the growth of harmful bacteria.
It's generally recommended to fill a slow cooker no more than two-thirds full to ensure that the food cooks evenly and safely. If you have a lot of ingredients, it's better to use a larger slow cooker or split the recipe into two smaller batches.
Is a 7l slow cooker too big?
A 7-liter slow cooker may be considered too big for some people, depending on their cooking needs and the size of their household. Here are some factors to consider when determining whether a 7-liter slow cooker is a right size for you:
- Household size: If you're cooking for a small household, such as a couple or a single person, a 7-liter slow cooker may be too big. You may find that you have to cook larger batches of food than you need, which can result in waste or leftovers that you don't want.
- Recipe size: Some slow cooker recipes are designed to fit a specific size of the slow cooker. If you often use recipes that are designed for smaller slow cookers, a 7-liter slow cooker may not be the best choice.
- Storage space: A 7-liter slow cooker may take up more space than a smaller one, so you'll need to consider whether you have enough room to store it when it's not in use.
- Cooking versatility: A larger slow cooker can offer more cooking versatility. With a 7-liter slow cooker, you can cook larger cuts of meat, and whole chicken, or even make large batches of soup or stew.
Ultimately, whether a 7-liter slow cooker is too big depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you have a larger household or like to cook large batches of food, a 7-liter slow cooker may be a good choice. However, if you're cooking for a small household or prefer to make smaller batches of food, a smaller slow cooker may be more appropriate.
Do slow cookers use a lot of electricity?
Slow cookers are generally considered to be energy-efficient appliances, as they use a low amount of electricity compared to other cooking methods. Slow cookers typically consume between 150-250 watts of power, depending on the model and size.
To put this in perspective, the average electric stove uses about 1,000-2,000 watts of power, and an oven can use up to 5,000 watts. So, slow cookers use significantly less electricity than these other appliances.
Additionally, slow cookers are designed to cook food at a low temperature over a long period of time, which means that they use less energy than traditional cooking methods. They are also very versatile and can be used to cook a wide range of dishes, including soups, stews, casseroles, and roasts, without requiring constant attention or stirring.
Overall, slow cookers are an energy-efficient cooking option that can save both time and money in the kitchen. They are especially useful for busy households and for those who want to save energy while preparing healthy and delicious meals.
What cannot be cooked in a slow cooker?
While slow cookers are versatile and can be used to cook a wide variety of dishes, there are some foods that are not well-suited for this cooking method. Here are a few examples of foods that are not recommended for slow cookers:
- Raw grains: Slow cookers are not a good choice for cooking raw grains, such as rice or quinoa. These grains require a precise amount of liquid and heat to cook properly, and slow cookers may not provide consistent enough temperature and liquid levels for optimal results.
- Dairy products: Dairy products, such as milk, cream, or cheese, should generally not be added to a slow cooker at the beginning of the cooking process. Dairy can curdle or separate if cooked for too long at high temperatures, so it's best to add these ingredients toward the end of the cooking process.
- Fried or crispy foods: Slow cookers are not the best choice for cooking fried or crispy foods, such as fried chicken or French fries. These foods rely on high heat and quick cooking times to achieve their crispy texture, which is difficult to replicate in a slow cooker.
- Delicate fish: Delicate fish, such as cod or tilapia, can become overcooked and fall apart in a slow cooker. If you want to use a slow cooker for fish, it's best to choose firmer varieties, such as salmon or tuna.
- Quick-cooking vegetables: Vegetables that cook quickly, such as spinach, broccoli, or asparagus, can become mushy and overcooked in a slow cooker. If you want to use these vegetables in a slow cooker recipe, it's best to add them toward the end of the cooking process.
Overall, slow cookers are best used for recipes that involve long, slow cooking times and ingredients that are forgiving when it comes to cooking temperature and liquid levels.
Is a 6.5 Litre slow cooker large?
A 6.5-liter slow cooker can be considered a large slow cooker, suitable for cooking meals for larger families or for entertaining guests. It can typically hold 6-8 servings of food, depending on the recipe and portion size.
A 6.5-liter slow cooker can be useful for cooking larger cuts of meat, such as roasts or whole chickens, as well as making soups, stews, or casseroles in larger batches. However, if you have a smaller household or don't need to cook large quantities of food, a smaller slow cooker may be more suitable.
Ultimately, the size of a slow cooker depends on your individual needs and preferences. It's important to consider the size of your household, the types of recipes you plan to make, and how much storage space you have available before choosing a slow cooker.
Conclusion
Ultimately, whether you are outdoors or at home, the luxury of having a slow cooker can be compared to having a good one that does all the work while you relax and enjoy the benefits.
