Everyone knows the value of having a good cooler. Being able to keep food and drinks fresh and cold during picnics, tailgate parties, festivals, camping trips, and long road trips is a luxury that expands your options for snacks, meals, and drinks outside the home. While melting ice and wet bags, bottles, and containers are a problem, they are necessary evils of using a cooler.
The Best Portable Electric Cooler, on the other hand, can be kept in the car to keep food fresh and cold when you need it. Even more impressive, some coolers can even keep food warm, making coolers ideal for road trips, outdoor activities, the beach, campers, and more.
If you’re looking for an in-car cooler, our in-depth product reviews and smart buying guide will help you navigate all the options on the market and choose the one that best suits your needs.
Best Portable Electric Cooler
Types of Refrigerators
Compressor-type Refrigerators
Compressor-type refrigerators are designed similarly to standard household refrigerators. Its mechanism regulates temperature by compressing refrigerant or cooling water and can be used as a refrigerator or freezer. Unlike other types of refrigerators, compressor refrigerators can function smoothly even when tilted or leveled.
Thermoelectric Coolers
Although a bit older, thermoelectric coolers do not have the ability to freeze food or make ice. Thermoelectric coolers, however, can lower the internal temperature to 40 degrees below room temperature. If you are traveling for short periods of time or live in a cooler climate, a thermoelectric cooler would be ideal for your situation. Note that thermoelectric coolers will not keep food cold if the ambient temperature is above 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
Absorption chillers
Absorption refrigerators, which are primarily found in recreational vehicles, operate on three types of power sources: 12 VDC, propane, and 110 AV. Unlike thermoelectric or compressor refrigerators, they use a lot of energy to operate and are prone to drain the battery. Like thermocoolers, they are dependent on the external environment, but can only drop up to 30 degrees below room temperature.
How do Thermoelectric Coolers Work?
Thermoelectric coolers utilize a chemical process called the Peltier effect. Simply put, when an electric current flows through two different conductive materials, a temperature difference is created.
Modern thermoelectric coolers are equipped with several of these connectors, connecting two different plates: one plate is inside the cooler and the other is outside, acting as a heat sink.
When current flows through the many connections, heat is transferred directly from one plate to the other. Some thermoelectric coolers also have a fan to cool the outer heat sink.
Which is better, an electric cooler or a regular cooler?
Commercially available thermoelectric coolers are designed to be used as mobile or stationary coolers. Many can be operated with a cigarette lighter adapter and are popular with housewives and truck drivers who need a cold drink on the go.
Because these electric coolers do not require ice, they often add prohibitive weight to the cooler and cannot be carried by a single woman. In addition, they require draining when the ice melts. Forget packing sandwiches in plastic bags. Nothing is more disgusting than having the contents of the bag leak after the ice melts and ruins your sandwich.
Electric coolers do not require ice and will never make your sandwich soggy again. There is no need to make a special stop to buy a bag of ice. Just plug the cooler into the car’s cigarette lighter socket and you’re done: it can cool down to the set temperature in less than 30 minutes. Some can even be set to near-freezing temperatures, which is something you would not normally take with you.
Before traveling or for use at home, the cooler can be plugged into an electrical outlet using an adapter to pre-cool or use at home. The only drawback is that this cooler requires space for a compressor, which does not allow for a very large interior space.
Advantages of Thermoelectric Coolers
Affordability
Other than buying a regular plastic cooler and filling it with ice, you can’t beat the low price of most thermoelectric coolers. They cost a fraction of the cost of a propane or solar cooler of the same size.
Durability
Thermoelectric coolers have few moving parts. Some models are equipped with fans that blow air over the outer surface of the plate, but all rely on a solid-state mechanism.
This makes them extremely durable and long-lasting. Thermoelectric coolers are one of the most cost-effective refrigeration methods, given their very affordable price and efficiency on a small scale.
Excellent temperature control within its range
One of the most interesting features of thermoelectric coolers is their precision. Depending on the model presented here, the cooler’s temperature can be set in one-degree increments and maintained reliably.
This is ideal if you want to keep your food cold without worrying about accidentally freezing it.
Some thermoelectric coolers have both heating and cooling functions. This is not necessarily a useful feature for off-grid living, but it can be interesting if you have something you want to warm up while it is running.
Small but Highly Efficient
When it comes to off-grid cooling, energy efficiency is paramount. If you need a refrigerator large enough to hold several days’ worth of food, a thermoelectric is the most efficient option.
Note that thermoelectric refrigerators quickly become inefficient as they get larger. A full-size solar refrigerator is much more efficient than a thermoelectric model of the same size.
No refrigerant required
Thermoelectric refrigerators are the only off-grid refrigerator option that does not require refrigerant. They rely entirely on the Peltier effect to transfer heat. Therefore, there is no need to worry about refrigerant leaks, which are destructive to the environment.

How To Pick The Best Portable Electric Cooler | Ultimate Guide 2023
Portability
If you are a camper, you may want to take your 12V refrigerator with you on a hike. Lightweight coolers have the advantage of being easy to move around. Portable refrigerator freezers can also be designed to fit into flexible spaces in vehicles.
Lid opening
The shape of the lid opening can affect the cooler's usability. Many drivers place their coolers between the front seats, which makes sense if they have a refrigerator freezer that opens at the top. However, many motorhome drivers use 12V refrigerators that open from the side without complaint.
Separate compartments
What if I want to separate frozen food from cold drinks? It is not always possible to mix everything. In such a case, a double-layered refrigerator would be suitable. In addition, the separate compartments make it convenient to heat up cold food.

Energy Efficiency
Since we are dealing with plug-in coolers, energy efficiency should be a priority. Solar-powered and battery-powered coolers are expensive, but they can save you a lot of money in the long run. Also, the more energy-efficient the product is without sacrificing quality, the better.
Insulation
A well-insulated cooling system should not rapidly lower the interior temperature when opened and closed. A slight temperature drop is expected, but a sudden drop is a red light that indicates a problem with the insulation. Otherwise, a sealed cooler should maintain the same internal temperature when exposed to direct sunlight.
Size and Capacity
As you can already see from our list of recommendations, electric coolers come in a wide range of sizes. In most cases, the larger the size, the greater the cooler's capacity. However, bigger is not always better. A larger size also means more weight and bulk in the vehicle.
On average, electric coolers weigh about one pound per liter of storage capacity. Keep this in mind when comparing coolers to see which ones offer the best combination of portability and capacity.
When choosing the size of your electric cooler, consider the average length of your trip and the number of people in your party. For a small weekend getaway, you may want to choose a smaller cooler. If you have a larger family, you may need a larger cooler with more storage capacity for a short trip.
Also Read: Best Slow Cooker With Browning Feature
Number of temperature zones
Multiple temperature zones can add versatility to your cooler, but they tend to cost more. If you plan to bring in both chilled and frozen foods, you will need a dual-zone electric cooler. Dometic, ARB, National Luna, and ICECO offer dual-zone portable coolers on this list.
You may also need a dual-zone if you have medicines that need to be refrigerated. This allows you to keep your prescriptions at the proper temperature no matter what is in the cooler. Since both zones have the same temperature range, you can use either as a refrigerator or freezer, depending on your needs.

Weight and Portability
Many electric coolers combine size and portability. Smaller coolers are easy to carry and store (for example, between the bucket seats of a pickup truck), while larger electric coolers must be placed in the trunk.
Remember that the weight listed in the specifications for these products is the weight with the cooler empty. It may seem like a lot, but it is. These small portable coolers have more mechanical parts and weigh considerably more than simple coolers.
When drinks and food are added, their weight tends to make them difficult to carry. Therefore, consider how you will load it and whether you will need to remove the refrigerator from the vehicle periodically during use.
Shelves and organization
Some electric coolers have areas separated by shelves or baskets. This is useful for organizing food and drinks so that you always know where everything is. Even in electric coolers that do not have multiple zones, baskets, and shelves are essential for organizing food.

FAQs
Which type of chiller is best?
Compressor-type chillers can chill food for extended periods of time, much like a home refrigerator. They are also more expensive than other onboard coolers, sometimes quite expensive. Thermoelectric coolers are more affordable but are not suitable for long-term food storage, as they can only lower temperatures by 40 degrees. A third portable refrigerator, the propane (or 12V or 120V) fueled absorption refrigerator, is more energy intensive and is best suited for RVs and seasonal camping where propane is available but electricity is not.
Does the location of the cooler opening matter?
For SUVs and cars, coolers are often located between occupants, so an opening at the top provides easier access. For motorhomes, side openings are also suitable since there is more space available. Some coolers can be rotated 90 degrees, or have both top and side openings on the same unit.
Why should I buy a small refrigerator that costs more than $500?
Better compressors and temperature controls keep food safely cold for days or weeks. They can also be used efficiently to keep one part of the food cold and another part frozen. They are useful for truck drivers, people who drive a lot, and people who need to keep medications cold.
Do coolers drain car batteries?
Not as long as the car is running and the alternator connected to the engine provides enough power. If the car is parked, the cooler will drain the battery in a few hours, so it's a good idea to have jumper cables just in case like these five jumper cables recently tested by Forbes Wheels.
Can a cooler, which can also heat, keep warm things warm?
It can keep hot food warm. It can prevent hot food from getting cold quickly. Sometimes that is enough.

Can you put ice in the electric cooler?
While it is technically possible to put ice in an electric cooler, it is generally not recommended. Electric coolers, also known as thermoelectric coolers, are designed to operate using a solid-state heat pump, which moves heat from the inside of the cooler to the outside using an electric current. Adding ice to the cooler can interfere with this process and reduce the cooling efficiency of the unit.
Additionally, the melted ice can create a pool of water at the bottom of the cooler, which can make it difficult to keep food and drinks dry and fresh. This can also create a mess when it's time to empty and clean the cooler.
Instead of using ice, electric coolers are designed to be used with pre-cooled items, such as frozen water bottles or pre-chilled food and drinks. This allows the cooler to operate at maximum efficiency and keep your items cool for longer periods of time.
If you prefer to use ice in your cooler, it's best to opt for a traditional ice chest or cooler that is specifically designed for use with ice. These types of coolers are generally better at keeping ice frozen for longer periods of time and can be more practical for certain situations, such as camping trips or picnics.
What are the disadvantages of thermoelectric coolers?
Thermoelectric coolers, also known as electric coolers, have several advantages such as portability, low noise, and the ability to run on 12V DC power. However, there are also some disadvantages to consider, including:
- Cooling efficiency: Thermoelectric coolers are generally less efficient at cooling than traditional compressor-based refrigerators or freezers. They are also less effective at cooling in hot temperatures, which can limit their usefulness in certain situations.
- Power consumption: While thermoelectric coolers are designed to run on 12V DC power, they still require a significant amount of energy to operate. This can drain the battery of a vehicle or other power source, and may not be practical for extended use without a backup power source.
- Capacity: Thermoelectric coolers are generally smaller in size than traditional refrigerators or freezers, which can limit their capacity and make them less practical for storing large amounts of food or drinks.
- Price: While electric coolers can be less expensive than traditional refrigerators or freezers, they are still a significant investment and may not be practical for everyone.
- Condensation: The cooling process used by thermoelectric coolers can create condensation inside the unit, which can lead to a buildup of moisture and mold if the cooler is not properly maintained and cleaned.
Overall, while thermoelectric coolers can be a convenient and effective option for keeping food and drinks cool in certain situations, they do have some limitations and may not be the best choice for everyone.
Is cooler better than AC?
Coolers and air conditioners (ACs) are two different types of cooling systems, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Which one is better for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences.
Coolers, also known as evaporative coolers or swamp coolers, work by using water to cool the air. They are typically less expensive to purchase and operate than air conditioners and can be more environmentally friendly since they use less energy. However, they are generally less effective at cooling in areas with high humidity and can increase the humidity level in the room.
Air conditioners, on the other hand, use refrigerant to cool the air and dehumidify the room. They are generally more effective at cooling in areas with high humidity and can provide a more consistent and comfortable temperature. However, they are typically more expensive to purchase and operate than coolers and can be less environmentally friendly due to their higher energy consumption.
In general, if you live in a hot and dry climate, a cooler may be a better choice for you. However, if you live in a more humid climate, an air conditioner may be more effective at providing cool and comfortable indoor air.
Ultimately, the choice between a cooler and an AC will depend on your specific needs, budget, and environmental concerns. It is best to evaluate both options and consider factors such as energy efficiency, initial cost, and ongoing maintenance costs before making a decision.
How long do electric coolers stay cold?
The length of time that an electric cooler can stay cold will depend on several factors, including the ambient temperature, the insulation of the cooler, and the type of items stored in the cooler.
In general, most electric coolers are designed to maintain a temperature difference of about 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit below the ambient temperature. For example, if the ambient temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the cooler may be able to maintain an internal temperature of around 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit.
The length of time that the cooler can stay cold will depend on the capacity of the cooler, the amount of pre-cooled items stored inside, and the ambient temperature. In general, a well-insulated electric cooler can keep items cold for anywhere from several hours to several days, depending on these factors.
To maximize the cooling efficiency of an electric cooler and ensure that items stay cold for as long as possible, it's important to pre-cool items before placing them in the cooler. This can be done by storing items in a refrigerator or freezer before transferring them to the electric cooler.
It's also important to keep the cooler out of direct sunlight and to limit the amount of time that the lid is open, as this can cause warm air to enter the cooler and reduce the cooling efficiency.
Do coolers use a lot of electricity?
The amount of electricity used by a cooler will depend on several factors, including the type of cooler, its capacity, and how it is being used.
Thermoelectric coolers, which are also known as electric coolers or portable coolers, use a thermoelectric cooling module to cool the contents of the cooler. These coolers generally use less electricity than compressor-based refrigerators or freezers, but they still require a significant amount of energy to operate. The exact amount of electricity used will depend on the size of the cooler, the temperature of the environment, and the temperature set on the cooler.
Compressor-based refrigerators or freezers, which are commonly found in homes or larger settings, use a compressor to circulate refrigerant and cool the contents of the unit. These types of coolers generally use more electricity than thermoelectric coolers, but they can also cool more effectively and maintain lower temperatures.
In general, smaller coolers will use less electricity than larger coolers. Additionally, the amount of electricity used will depend on how frequently the cooler is used, how long it is kept running, and the temperature setting. It's important to check the energy consumption rating of any cooler you are considering purchasing, as this will give you an idea of how much electricity it will use.
Overall, while coolers do use electricity to operate, they are generally more energy-efficient than traditional refrigerators or freezers. It's important to weigh the benefits of having a portable, electric cooler with the energy consumption costs and determine if it's the right choice for your needs.
